I installed Enfuse and tried a macro focus stack but the result is awful. Now I'm not sure if I should pay something or give up on it. Is Enfuse better suited to larger scenes like landscapes? What is the customary donation for this type of thing? is there a better way to focus stack macros in

Tom, Both Zerene Stacker and Helicon Focus have trial versions. There is some functionality built into Photoshop too, starting (I think) with version CS. Have a go at the first two an see if you're more comfortable with the workflow in those. It's probably a good idea to view the tutorials too
