Instead of using the 'global' keyword, use the $GLOBALS array:

$var='foobar';

function gUnset()
   {
   echo "BEFORE: {$GLOBALS['var']}";
   unset($GLOBALS['var']);
   echo "AFTER: {$GLOBALS['var']}";
   }

gUnset();
