Quick update: I didn't get a chance to build a recent GNU Classpath-based runtime, but one I have lying around from the middle of last year seems to run your test app against JFreeChart 1.0.9 just fine. This suggests that the problem is likely to be a regression in GNU Classpath...I'm short on time to investigate further, but I will try to get back to this, though.
