Importing external furniture files in zip format does not
work. No import assistant opens. I have tried different
3D furniture files downloaded from the sweethome3d project page.
After opening the zip file, sweethome3d returns to the normal
state immediately, but the new furniture is not offered in
the furniture list. Restarting sweethome3d does not. Trying
to import a second time gives an error about an already
existing library.

That works for me. However you have to unpack the zip file first. Inside
you will find a sh3f file which you can import with sweethome3d then.
