It's not clear to me that there is a bug here at all, but I plan to do some
work on tomcat5.5 soon(-ish) and will take a closer look then.

If a users such as myself makes CATALINA_BASE some other directory like
/srv/tomcat5.5, any upgrade of the product will delete the symlinks and

Please excuse the initial severity of this bug. I have discovered that
the reason the tomcat install hosed my CATALINA_BASE was due to a user
(who used to have sudo permissions and now has a very nasty MOTD) who
seemed to be hitting bug 402603 and trying
