Ok, so that's the rotatelogs script which is the culprit ...
So, how do you explain that, when you upgrade tomcat5.5 package within
the Synaptic GUI, at the end of the upgrade, the tomcat daemon is not
running ???
The init.d script is correctly called, restart action invocated, and
tomcat

What version are you upgrading from and to?
