Bug#526489: Re: Bug#526489: Time to orphan eclipse? (Bug#526489: eclipse: should this package be orphaned?)

2009-06-15 Thread Markus Knauer
Hi *,

can I be of any help?

I don't think that I have the time to take over the entire packaging of
Eclipse in Debian - at least not at the moment, but I can offer to help and
advice anyone who would be willing to do this. I am building all those
packages that you can download from eclipse.org/downloads and we are just a
few days away from the next major release - Galileo. So, maybe not the best
moment to 'orphan' Eclipse in Debian. Personally I think it would be great
to have a newer version of Eclipse and its tools in Debian.

Or did you contact one of the persons of the Linux Distro Project? Maybe
they have some resources they can spend on that?

Regards, Markus

Hi,

 From: Ana Guerrero a...@debian.org

Third and last warning, I will orphan eclipse next saturday (20th June),

Perhaps the right thing to do is simply to have eclipse removed from the
archive. It is way too outdated to be useful now, and would require *major*
work to update.

Cheers,

Marcus

The major work is essentially equivalent to a rewrite (of the packaging).
Different jdk, build system, update management, policy, etc etc.
Pretty much the only things left will be the boilerplate (debian/copyright
files and such).

Removing the eclipse 3.2 from the archive would be fine with me, fwiw,
especially if it motivates anyone to contribute towards getting 3.5 in.

Unfortunately, we do not (and we're now known as the Linux Tools Project
:) . However, we are working on making the Eclipse SDK (eclipse in
this context) more easily buildable by Linux distros. When that is
ready, we plan to publicize it and hopefully it will spark some interest
in packaging for the various distros.

About half a year ago I offered sponsoring packages to push

check about Debian policy and stuff - not really stress test
whether the installed packages are really working.

I might add that my spare time to do this is not as much

Kind regards

You could ask to join the java team for maintaining eclipse, so you can commit
in the pkg-java's SVN and updating the package. (*)
Given the size of eclipse and all its functionalities, only one single
maintainer is too few. And even if you all do not manage to fix all the
problems,
some maintainance is better than none. The main issue is you will always need
an interested Debian Developer to sponsor the package.

(*) Ask about this in debian-j...@lists.debian.org list.

I can sponsor and do have Java experience (although won't be using
Eclipse). Eclipse is also a fairly complicated package from what I
remember, so may take some time for anyone to grok, Java experience or
not.

Eclipse is widely used for sure, it is just the version that is in debian
that practically nobody uses these days. Debian users typically just
download the upstream binary version instead.

Perhaps the eclipse package can be replaced with an installer-type
thingie (a-la fwcutter) that just brings in the appropriate dependencies
(e.g., openjdk, xulrunner etc) and arranges for the upstream binary
to be installed would be the most useful option short term.

That is, until upstream gets a sane build system that does not require
tons of patches and complexity and us debian people can agree to
a policy regarding the packaging of eclipse and collaboration of apt
with eclipse's P2.

That would seem like a reasonable interim solution, but (iirc) such a
package can't be included in main, but rather stored in contrib.

I completely agree with Ana, this package needs new fresh blood to

but I didn't managed to have time to.

IMO this should be orphaned, and let another team aggregate to maintain it.
