It doesn't happen reliably here, either, but it seems more likely to happen
when another instance of vlc is running in the background. I'm running KDE, so
it doesn't have anything with gnome-related software per se. Running vlc from
konqueror or the command line doesn't matter, both segfault

When dragging a directory into the playlist[*] and double-clicking the newly
added entry, vlc segfaults in libdvdread.so.4.2.0 as well.
This does not happen if you click the entry once, wait a moment and double-
click then.

I can't reproduce.
As you mention it comes from libdvdread.so.4. So it's likely to be a bug
in libdvdread. Sadly there is no -dbg package for libdvdread. Else a
backtrace produced with gdb

To reproduce:
1- start vlc
2- if playlist is not visible, menu View - Playlist or CTRL+L
3- close vlc
4- from nautilus, right-click on the directory which contains multimedia files
and select Open with - VLC (same behavior by running $ vlc
