in any case, i don't see anything bad in removing a handful of files in

new package: gmerlin-encoders

2011-01-17 Thread IOhannes m zmoelnig
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

hi all,

since we now (almost) have the newest versions of gavl, gmerlin and
gmerlin-avdecoder in debian, i thought i give the last of the
gmerlin-packages a try: gmerlin-encoders.

the package is an addon to gmerlin, adding a number of encoder-plugins
(gmerlin therefore has a Suggests: gmerlin-encoders)

some of them have dependencies not in debian (and are consequently left
out of the game)

this package luckily seems to not contain any bsd-4-clause cause, so
packaging was very much straightforward.

my attempts can be seen at
git+ssh://git.debian.org/git/pkg-multimedia/gmerlin-encoders

the package appears to be lintian clean.

from my pov, the package could be uploaded as soon as gmerlin has been
uploaded (and once debian/changelog has been set to the correct release,
which i guess is experimental for now)

I believe you are wrong about the last part.

hmm, well i guess this all depends.
clean is probably called several times in the build process.

according to
http://build-common.alioth.debian.org/cdbs-doc.html#fig:buildcore the
clean target will simply be called without further ado.

Build tools work on top of the packaging source.

Patching historically was applied op top too, but with dpkg-source is
done below from the POV of build tools.

This caused us problems with our preferred way of working with our VCS,
so we chose to set a flag requesting dpkg-source to unapply patches as a
final step.

So all in all, we chose ourselves the smallest of evils: If our clean
target is affected by patches, then we need to manually re-apply them
before an explicit clean. In all other situations it Just Works(tm).

in any case, i don't see anything bad in removing a handful of files in
order to get a completely clean source tree in _any_ case.

Ok. I'll rest my case.

But beware that only removals are possible to handle like that. More
complex cleanup is involved, like renaming files put aside during build,
it may still fail if invoking clean explicitly without first
re-applying patches.

The official correct routine for our packaging style is to manually
re-apply patches before explicitly cleaning. due to our choice of
enabling unapply-patches in local-options. So remember to mention that
if anyone consider filing a bugreport against CDBS or debhelper ;-)

Should not we upload gmerlin first?

yes of course.

but this doesn't mean that i don't consider gmerlin-avdecoder
ready :-)

AFAIK, gmerlin-avdecoder does not require gmerlin, only libgavl of the
gmerlin suite. At least when I packaged gmerlin-avdecoder for Fink,
that was the case.

Is above really necessary?

I am not experienced with debug packages myself, but believe CDBS should
handle that detail automagically, based on the package name.

gmerlin-encoders_1.0.0-1_amd64.changes is NEW

2011-01-17 Thread Debian FTP Masters
(new) gmerlin-encoders_1.0.0-1.debian.tar.gz extra libs

encoders for gmerlin
Gmerlin is a multiformat media player with tree-like virtual directory
structure, where you can save your files, webstreams or whatever. It
handles even large media collections gracefully. Hardware devices appear
also in the tree so you can open Audio-CDs, (S)VCDs, DVDs and
 DVB-broadcasts.
 .
This package includes a number of encoders to be used by Gmerlin,
enabling gmerlin-transcoder to encode more file formats.
(new) gmerlin-encoders_1.0.0.orig.tar.gz extra libs
Changes: gmerlin-encoders (1.0.0-1) experimental; urgency=low
 .
  * Initial release. (Closes: #610164)
