Bug#807805: vlc: Crash upon startup
Package: vlc Version: 2.2.1-5+b1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Dear Maintainer, *** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** * What led up to the situation? After a recent system upgrade in Debian Testing, `vlc` cannot start and crashes reporting: "QSystemTrayIcon::setVisible: No Icon set" * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? This is reproducable in my environment. I am running i3wm installed alongside with KDE5. Reinstalling or reconfiguring `vlc` did not solve the issue. * What was the outcome of this action? VLC crash upon startup. * What outcome did you expect instead? VLC starts normally. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing-updates APT policy: (500, 'testing-updates'), (500, 'testing-proposed-updates'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 4.2.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages vlc depends on: ii fonts-freefont-ttf 20120503-4 ii libaa1 1.4p5-44 ii libavcodec-ffmpeg56 7:2.8.3-1 ii libavutil-ffmpeg54 7:2.8.3-1 ii libc6 2.19-22 ii libcaca00.99.beta19-2+b1 ii libcairo2 1.14.4-1 ii libegl1-mesa [libegl1-x11] 11.0.6-1 ii libfreerdp-client1.11.1.0~git20140921.1.440916e+dfsg1-5+b1 ii libfreerdp-core1.1 1.1.0~git20140921.1.440916e+dfsg1-5+b1 ii libfreerdp-gdi1.1 1.1.0~git20140921.1.440916e+dfsg1-5+b1 ii libfreetype62.6.1-0.1 ii libfribidi0 0.19.7-1 ii libgcc1 1:5.2.1-23 ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl1]11.0.6-1 ii libgles1-mesa [libgles1]11.0.6-1 ii libgles2-mesa [libgles2]11.0.6-1 ii libglib2.0-02.46.2-1 ii libpulse0 7.1-2 ii libqt5core5a5.5.1+dfsg-8 ii libqt5gui5 5.5.1+dfsg-8 ii libqt5widgets5 5.5.1+dfsg-8 ii libqt5x11extras55.5.1-3 ii librsvg2-2 2.40.11-2 ii libsdl-image1.2 1.2.12-5+b5 ii libsdl1.2debian 1.2.15-12 ii libstdc++6 5.2.1-23 ii libva-drm1 1.6.1-1 ii libva-x11-1 1.6.1-1 ii libva1 1.6.1-1 ii libvlccore8 2.2.1-5+b1 ii libvncclient1 0.9.10+dfsg-3 ii libx11-62:1.6.3-1 ii libxcb-composite0 1.10-3+b1 ii libxcb-keysyms1 0.4.0-1 ii libxcb-randr0 1.10-3+b1 ii libxcb-shm0 1.10-3+b1 ii libxcb-xv0 1.10-3+b1 ii libxcb1 1.10-3+b1 ii libxext62:1.3.3-1 ii libxi6 2:1.7.5-1 ii libxinerama12:1.1.3-1+b1 ii libxpm4 1:3.5.11-1+b1 ii vlc-nox 2.2.1-5+b1 ii zlib1g 1:1.2.8.dfsg-2+b1 Versions of packages vlc recommends: ii vlc-plugin-notify 2.2.1-5+b1 ii vlc-plugin-samba 2.2.1-5+b1 ii xdg-utils 1.1.1-1 vlc suggests no packages. Thanks! Is it due to a lack of some interface in i3wm, in which case it is i3wm's bug, or that `vlc` is assuming some interface that is not necessarily present in any system? severity 800586 important thanks Hi, > package: camorama > version: 0.19-3 > severity: grave > reason: fails its primary functionality > > It fails with an error message "Cannot create directory ~/Webcam_Picture > s" > > Same message after manually creating the directory. Taking pictures is only one functionality of camorama, but I wouldn't consider it the "primary" one. Hence I'd argue that this is important, but not grave enough to be RC. For example, live preview is not affected, and that's all I ever use the program for. I can confirm that in default configuration, Clicking "Take Picture" does nothing. However, taking pictures works fine here, after doing "Edit - Preferences", "Local Capture", and checking "Enable local capture". If I now press the "Take Picture" button, a picture is created. So from all I can tell, this is "just" bad UI. Downgrading accordingly, to let the package go back to testing. Bug#807854: additional information
I noted the problem when opening a *.txt file. STFW Xfce stores file associations for a given user in: ~/.config/mimeapps.list Mine contained two entries that seem to be the source of the bug: 2015-12-13 13:23:42 dpchrist@i72600s ~/.config $ egrep -i '^\[|devede' mimeapps.list-20151212-225710-devede [Default Applications] text/plain=devede.desktop [Added Associations] text/plain=devede.desktop; Removing them fixed the problem for *.txt files -- double-clicking on a *.txt file in Thunar opens the file in Mousepad. But when I double-click on a *.devede file, it is also opened by Mousepad! So, it appears that: 1. Xfce thinks *.txt files are MIME type text/plain. 2. Xfce thinks *.devede files are MIME type text/plain. 3. Xfce uses MIME type for file association. So, the root cause of the problem appears to be Xfce and the design of its file association feature (?).
