Hmm, sounds like it would. The vlc.desktop file uses %U in Debian as well and handles the file:// URLs correctly. The VLC bug report sounds like they have changed the handling of such strings in VLC. Maybe we should file a bugreport at the smplayer BTS as I couldn't find such a bug existing
