When 'audacity' first loads, it tries to grab information about capture
and playback elements for card number 0. On my system, ALSA finds my
cheap DSP card first, so it becomes card 0:

I can confirm that the bug is fixed now, could you please release a new
package of smplayer?

Hmm, sounds like it would.
The vlc.desktop file uses %U in Debian as well and handles the file://
URLs correctly.
The VLC bug report sounds like they have changed the handling of such
strings in VLC.
Maybe we should file a bugreport at the smplayer BTS as I couldn't find
such a bug existing
