Applications Menu-Settings-Printing hangs asking for a password of
other users, then offers a root login, and claims that the root
password may not be correct, and hangs in that loop. (So, I can't
enable any printers in XFCE 7.6.0 that has been updated; several
machine behave this way.)

This is likely not an issue in xfce since there is no 7.6.0 release nor a
xfce printing utility. Do you have any idea what the printing app might be?

Specifying a default-user-image in /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf has no
effect when greeter-hide-users=true is set in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.
