[issue34194] test_ssl, AIX, and defaults for _ssl connections

2018-09-10 Thread Michael Felt

Michael Felt  added the comment:

When built against a less optimized OpenSSL library all tests pass. So, IMHO,
not a bug, and closing.

The buildbots will (eventually) build against a less optimized library and the
error messages will match. That was the cause of all these messages (no
matching error message).

[issue34465] ipaddress should accept bytearray in addition to bytes

2018-09-10 Thread Gregory P. Smith

Gregory P. Smith added the comment:

This isn't limited to just IPv4Address, the Network classes and the IPv6
classes that accept bytes should also be updated for consistency if we're going
to do this.

(bytes, bytearray, memoryview) make sense to support, and explicitly test in
unittests.

Until then, the workaround is to call bytes on the relevant slice of those.

[issue34586] collections.ChainMap should have a get_where method

2018-09-10 Thread Raymond Hettinger

Raymond Hettinger  added the comment:

I've discussed this with other core devs and spent a good deal of time
evaluating this proposal. I'm going to pass on the this one but do think it
was a inspired suggestion. Thank you for the proposal.

--

Note, the original get_where() recipe has an issue. Upon successful lookup, it
returns a 2-tuple but on failure it calls __missing__ which typically returns a
scalar (if it doesn't raise an exception).

The proposed use case is plausible but rare. As Serhiy mentioned, it is also
reasonable for the user to write their own loops over the *maps* attribute.
That loop can have subtleties but it is better to let the user choose between
try/except semantics and if-else semantics according to the use case.

FWIW, I tried out several variants of the proposal including "cm.index(key) ->
int" and "cm.search(key) -> mapping". Each of the variants had some
awkwardness when trying to use it there didn't seem to be a variant that was a

[issue34623] _elementtree.c doesn't call XML_SetHashSalt()

STINNER Victor  added the comment:

Oh. I forgot this thing. So it seems like we have to backport this change to
2.7, 3.6 and newer versions.

What about Python 3.4 and 3.5? Python 3.5 has a copy of libexpat 2.2.0, but
setup.py doesn't build expat with XML_POOR_ENTROPY=1.

[issue32236] open() shouldn't silently ignore buffering=1 in binary mode

2018-09-10 Thread Gregory P. Smith

Gregory P. Smith added the comment:

My problem with a warning is the standard one: People who see a warning are
often end users of python applications (who don't even have to know what Python
is, let alone know anything about the code). For that reason, never add a
warning to a stable branch - only new releases (meaning 3.8 here).

Given that this isn't not a deprecation of meaningful API behavior but is
highlighting questionably undefined nonsense behavior, users complaining upon
obtaining 3.8 should ultimately reach library and application developers who
use the API wrong to update their call sites to explicitly ask for what they
intended instead of being ambiguious.

FYI - the subprocess.py related changes in your PR are correct.

[issue34624] -W option does not accept module regexes

2018-09-10 Thread Thomas Gläßle

New submission from Thomas Gläßle :

Hi,

This command does not report a warning, while it should:

  python -c 'import warnings; warnings.warn("This should show up")' -Wi
-W'default:::.*'

If the regex `.*` is replaced by `__main__` it works as expected.

Same applies for regexes in PYTHONWARNINGS and for the `message` part of the
argument.

The reason can be found in Lib/warnings.py:144 (def _setoption):

  module = re.escape(module)

This point-blank escape makes me think that it was intended that no regexes can
be passed to message/module. On the other, the documentation reads as if it
should be supported.

Specifically, the -W option is documented in [1]. While this page lists only
basic examples, it refers to [2] and [3] for more details. [2] states that
message/module are regexes. [3] seems to be written to specifically address the
syntax of the PYTHONWARNINGS and the -W option and explicitly lists an example
with a regex.

[1]: https://docs.python.org/3/using/cmdline.html#cmdoption-w
[2]: https://docs.python.org/3/library/warnings.html#warning-filter
[3]: https://docs.python.org/3/library/warnings.html#describing-warning-filters

I would welcome if we could remove `re.escape` to make the implementation fit
the documentation, or are there any downsides to this?

Best regards, Thomas

Antoine Pitrou  added the comment:

Indeed, "master" in itself is used in a wide range of contexts and can have
quite positive connotations (I master Python programming).

The word "slave" I agree with removing if used gratuitously. If its use
reflects an established convention which we do not have power to change, then
we should probably keep using it for the sake of clarity (for example in the
openpty case, since we're merely exposing a glibc function).

[issue34623] _elementtree.c doesn't call XML_SetHashSalt()

2018-09-10 Thread Christian Heimes

New submission from Christian Heimes :

The pyexpat module calls XML_SetHashSalt(self->itself,
(unsigned long)_Py_HashSecret.expat.hashsalt) to initialize the salt for hash
randomization of the XML_Parser struct. The _elementree C accelerator doesn't
call XML_SetHashSalt().

It's not a security issue with recent versions of libexpat. The library
initializes the salt from a good entry source by default.

We definitely can't make that change to PyNumber_Divmod in 3.7 at this point,
I'm sure someone somewhere is relying on being able to get arbitrary
information out of their objects with `divmod(crazy_object)`. I don't know
enough math to say whether there could be any legitimate mathematical use for
arbitrary return values so I leave it to others to determine whether we could
make that consider that change in 3.8 just to clean things up.

I've looked through _datetimemodule.c and I don't see how timedelta.__divmod__
could fail like this, since it actually creates new timedelta objects from its
arguments to work from.
