Yes it is a 9. I've wanted to switch to Silver Thumbies so that might just
be the next upgrade. Good point about the derailleur too, that's something
to consider.

High normal refers to “regular” rear derailleurs, for which the default position with no spring tension is in the highest gear. Hence, high normal. Low normal (what Shimano called Rapid Rise) is the opposite: the default derailleur position without spring tension is in the lowest (largest) gear.
Just curious: What does 'high normal' mean in the derailleur world?

Fantastic!! I've been keeping up with the PBE posts on Instagram. The

bucket list of activities to do. Thanks for sharing the photos and short

Hey Collin,
I had the same issue with my hanging Edelux (also while living in
Berkeley). The condensation would not go away no matter how long I kept it
out of the rain. Turns out there was a bad batch of lights. I sent my light

I liked your video John - thanks for sharing. Looked like a nice route.
Nick - good proof of what I wrote about ride memories, that was 40 years
ago and you shared some good details that I could easily visualize.

I'll go with the wait and see approach then (I've got 2 more years on the

I have a lovely 2003 Rivendell Custom.
In its first iteration, I put Mavic Ksyriums on it.
Admiittedly, it looks better without the Ksyriums -

Ahh apologies, I see what you're saying now. I never actually removed the
shifters from the clamps so can't speak to that. I just reversed the entire
shifter assemblies around.

Oh, golly! Thank you. I have outbound hemispheric reversal (a fancy way of
saying I see the correct orientation bit it gets turned around on the way out)
so I frequently have things backwards. This was very helpful.

About 40 years ago, when I was a racing cyclist, I rode in an early season
spring race (three laps of a 50km circuit) that started in nice sunny
conditions with the temperature somewhere around 60-65F, so we all started
in shorts and short sleeves. Towards the end of the second lap, the wind
I have acquired a few and enjoy them when paired with the correct
thumbshifter. To me, they're not inherently better than High Normal
derailleurs, BUT because I always use my thumbshifters to shift the rear
derailleur and keep them on the inside of my bars, the Low Normal/Rapid
Rise keep me
Honestly I gave up on them because the costs are way over what a very nice
non-RR sells for. Its an interesting feature and I understand why people
like it but at the end of the day I personally don't think the difference
is life changing enough to pay the premium. Shimano really doesn't make
Thank you. The only issue is I kinda like indexing shifters...

Still on the hunt here in the event anyone's still got a frame/bike they

Any are good. I am assuming you are using a cassette with the standard 34t
or 36t top gear. Any those you list will do the job adequately. .

Which ones would you recommend? Were there are early RR derailleurs that
one should stay from or budget ones that are a good value? Were there
differences in pulley sizes - so would be better to get one where
Whatever gets you riding it. Carbon rims are "invisible" if they have a
decent braking surface, as those appear to have. I think it's fun. Grant
poked fun at the 20-spoke front wheel on my new Roadeo. Those wheels are
definitely ugly but ugly gets you a good price sometimes. Lean into it
Your build came out very close to the build I'm working on--I think we have
the same levers, brakes, saddle, and wheels. Great choice on the bar tape.
I'm debating between that and the Blue Lug acrylic cloth tape in olive,
which I already have in possession.
Well done!

Visual ride report of a day that ended in pretty hard rain. About 6
minutes into the video the rain came. at 9:40 we're making wakes.
