Love your build, Ben! (probably because it reminds me a bit of my blue Clem
trail bike...) Any tips on the Newbaums-over-Ergons treatment? I love my
Ergons for their, uh, ergonomics, but yours look so much nicer with the
tape on top! Shellac, or no?

I’d opt for double butted spokes rather than straight gauge if you’re going
to the trouble of having them built up. Stronger & lighter for just a
couple bucks more.

Folks - thank you so much for all of your incredibly helpful & thoughtful
responses! I've read through each one multiple times and feel so much
better informed now and can't wait to transition to the pedaling years with
my son!

Since RBW regrettably doesn't make kids hillibikes, I'm going to have to go
a bit outside of my comfort zone to pick out a first pedal bike for my son.
He's ~3.5yo, and more than ready to move up from his 12" balance bike.
Any tips from other parents who have recently gone through the switch
Haha, totally get that! I have to say, the durability & simplicity of the
Lezyne screw on head has been fantastic - I'm just getting lazy in my old
(mid-30s) age
Really appreciate all of the recommendations so far - the Silca that fits
on a Schrader is very intriguing
On Wednesday,
I've had a Lezyne High Volume floor pump for about 10 years, and I'm kinda
tired of screwing/unscrewing the head every time I inflate a tire (not to
mention the times when the valve core comes out, too...) Does anyone have a
reco for an inexpensive easy to use replacement head that I could
Wait a secaren't *we* the 'traditional' mountain bikers?! They're the
ones who need motorcycle parts to ride on a trail through the woods
But yeah, I've rarely ridden my Clem on the local trails without some sort
of passerby amazement/amusement.

& if I did I could use a shorter stem that would be inserted quite a bit more. In addition, that would put me on a 700c bike vs. a 27.5” one. I am very happy with what I have. Hope that helps.Sent from my iPhoneOn Sep 27, 2023, at 2:12 PM, Nick Shoemaker <fiddl...@gmail.com> wrote:I'm ~6'1 wi
Good call - Ikon 2.2 is a goodie. Seems to last forever and was easier to mount tubeless than Schwalbes. I’d personally be sketched out with one on the front, but loved it as a rear tire in the summer. On Aug 25, 2023, at 11:03 PM, Hoch in ut wrote:A good all-around tire is the Maxxis Ikon in 26
My go-to 26 MTB tires in order of aggressiveness:
Hans Dampf
Nobby Nic
Mezcal
HD/NN is about perfect for year round singletrack in East Tennessee.
NN/Mezcal would be great for ~50% singletrack. Regardless, it rarely makes
sense to have the same tire F/R - a few extra grams on a good front tire
I’ve gotten my 64 to fit in an older version of that rack - you can make it
work, but the tires won’t quite fit down in the tray. It’s secure, if not
confidence-inspiring.
I recently upgraded to a 1up and it’s dreamy - plenty of space for all that
wonderful wheelbase!

Whoa! What is that stem and how did it work out for you? Do you have long
legs/short torso and needed a tall bike with less reach? Any odd handling
impacts from the lack of any stem extension?
Beautiful frame, too.

+1 on Mezcals; I'm running a 2.6 & 2.3 on my Clem and they are shockingly
well-behaved on pavement for a knobby while still being more than adequate
on singletrack. They also offer a tan-wall version if you can't stomach the
gray; both can be found for $30-40 on BikeInn. Vittoria also has an
I was in a similar situation: I had a comparably spec'd Giant with bars
that were way too low for me to ride comfortably. I somewhat solved it by
adding a long/tall stem and Bosco bars, but soon after built up my own Clem

So what's the lowdown on S-Ride? Are they the manufacturer of the new Riv
7s cassettes? And how does their stuff compare to other budget drivetrain
options like SunRace & Microshift?

Rivendell group, right? There are four correct responses to the 'right'
number of rings bikes:
1
3
7
9
So everyone was right. Well done!

Just went full Hilli with my Clem, replacing some 2.25 G-One Allrounds with
a 2.6 Mezcal (actual 2.55) in back and a 2.6 Nobby Nic (actual 2.4) in the
front. Might as well be a new bike - can’t say enough good things about the

I've always run 10sp Campy brifters with a Shimano 8sp cassette on my San
Marcos. No funky cable trickery required, you just set them up like normal
and end up with 7 functional clicks using any standard Shimano derailleur.
I think it's far-and-away the most riv-ish option for brifters if you
