Hello,
A user reported that plots don't work in SageMathCell, while they used to a
couple months ago. I am not sure how could it have changed, since I never
installed cairo or X11. In any case I cannot figure out how to do it.
Installing libcairo-dev showed in R capabilities() support for PNG,
I get the same error:
capabilities()
jpeg png tifftcltk X11 aqua http/ftp sockets
FALSEFALSEFALSE TRUEFALSEFALSE TRUE TRUE
libxml fifo clediticonv NLS profmemcairo ICU
TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE
Recompiled with libpng-devel and cairo-devel, now it works:
capabilities()
jpeg png tifftcltk X11 aqua http/ftp sockets
TRUE TRUEFALSE TRUEFALSEFALSE TRUE TRUE
libxml fifo clediticonv NLS profmemcairo ICU
Now that sage can speak the ipython notebook protocol, it might be nice if
there were a docker image that can be plugged into https://try.jupyter.org/
. Before putting too much work in the process we should probably check that
the jupyter people would be happy to host the backend, but if they
OK, adding options(bitmapType='cairo') before plotting does seem to work
even though X11 is still FALSE. Kind of strange that it is not set
automatically when X11 is not available.

Homebrew tries to avoid exposing headers and libraries for packages that
are already bundled with OS X or have alternatives on OS X (e.g. readline
vs libedit) by installing such packages into what they call Cellars. At
least in my personal experience, this has been successful, however I've
