I had the same idea. But I don't quite know how to go about it...
Do I just download a compressed edition of ex. Chromium and build it from
source? Would that have permission to look into where Sage places files?

little old. I am on 22.04.2 LTS.
I looked into the case you suggested, but I don't see this as the same
problem. Since in my case it make the files and the web browser launches
and tries to read the file (It just can't /
The bigger issue might be with firefox installed via snap.
Then it has a seriously limited access to local files.

in the packaged versions, in which case we install sagemath from source.
First check if your issue is related to this TMPDIR issue?
I am having trouble getting plot3d to work on Ubuntu 20.00 with Firefox
(newest) downloaded from "Ubuntu software" (Ubuntu's software centre).
Firefox browser say that it can't see the file:
