Hi Amy,
I'm that guy with the issue with macOS.
I used Mattias Ellert's page of Sane files for macOS. It has recently
closed down. (I suspect there was trouble keeping up with changes to
the Mac OS.) Some copies are found on the Wayback machine:
P.S. Checking on backend versions, I found that Mattias Ellert's
Official site has disappeared.

A couple of links on sane-project pages are now duds:
SANE - Frontends / TWAIN SANE Interface for MacOS X
http://sane-project.org/sane-frontends.html
&
SANE - Download / MacOS X
along with what
looks like a Linux compilation page (?). It mentioned 'bottles' of
xsane for macOS 10.15 (Catalina) down to 10.12 {Sierra); the next step
was "x86_64_linux", possibly instead of macOS 10.11 (El Capitan).
So woe is me, or so it seems. Again.

Thanks for replying, Ralph.
Here's the Terminal outcome:
miMac:~ Niels$ SANE_DEBUG_SNAPSCAN=128 scanimage -L
[sanei_debug] Setting debug level of snapscan to 128.

Hello,
I have an Agfa Snapscan 1212U, with SANE and appropriate firmware
(Snapscan 1212U_2.bin) installed on an iMac9,1. But I can't get it to
work under El Capitan. The device shows up in a Terminal search
(sane-find-scanner), but there is no sign of life – no growls, no
flashing lights, no
