Is there free software that can be used together with the infrared data
produced by the coolscan2 backend to remove dust and scratches from the
scanned pictures? I could find a `duster' utility in an old version of
the coolscan2 backend and some old GIMP plugin. Is there anything else
available?

I just bought a Canon LiDE 50 USB scanner. It should be supported
by the genesys backend. When I try to get a scan (or preview),
the slider starts to move a little bit, a green light is emitted but
then it remains in the start area. The real scan is not startet.

stop using the halftone (dithered binary) mode. use a lineart
(standard binary) mode instead. if that is not enough, then do
scanimage --help
and look for threshold options, or switch to grayscale mode.

You are correct, the perl script driver supports the 1815dn but the SANE
dell1600n_net backend does not. This is because I don't have an 1815dn and
adding the support to the perl driver was a real pain (as I was unable to
test as I went along). For this reason I don't have any
