if you only have one scanner, you dont need to use the -d argument.

Thanks for the reply, on the Desktop PC I just have one scanner, but on the
laptop when I make a scanimage -L it detects first the webcam, so I must
add the -d argument.

There is clearly a need for an inexpensive A3 sized scanner which
works with sane. It seems that so far, no one with the development
skills has stepped up to do the needed reverse engineering and
programming.
