Further, it's picking up the correct size, cropping et all. Shame it's
entirely black. In GIMP I can see all pixels are #00 so I doubt
it's calibration after all.

I just picked up one of these portable scanners, it works well in
Windows.
In Linux and either xsane or simple-scan however it always scans a
completely black page.
Thinking it was a calibration issue I ran:-
