If you think that 1.0.25 or 1.0.26git on your server may fix it, please try that. If it doesn't, this could be something due to network latency, the connection being slow to close preventing the second scanimage from getting one, the avahi support being buggy or something peculiar to your scanner. In that case, you could enable the pnm backend (and disable hpaio) on 10.0.0.25 and check if that suffers the same problem. If not, it's probably something with the hpaio backend which is *not* one of the sane-backends backends. If you can reproduce this with 1.0.26git and the pnm backend, by all means file a bug report.
