there is a but in the SANE bug tracker [1] about the issue with default
resoltion. The description seems to match the problem you notice. Maybe
you can comment on the bug and give more input.

This is a recent SANE version (1.0.20.1). Is this version broken? everything
seems to work fine (except that it generates blank images).
