No: The i18n concept for Sane is this:
- The backends return in every case the Endlish strings
I'm not sure I grasp it.
So if I install ubuntu on a vm for each language I want to support would I
be able to copy the output for each language?
Or would it be better to do a google translate for the languages? I can add
tables for translating the common options if need be.

Good question!
While the backends have their messages translated to some 20 languages,
it is the SANE frontend's responsibility to activate translation. I did
a quick check of the scanimage source

Indirectly. scanimage pulls in the option title and description from the
backend. Therefore, if the backend has translations, then scanimage will
pass them on. e.g. fujitsu:
Does scanimage actually contain the l10n
functionality?

I set all those and I still get English.

export LANGUAGE=de_DE
export LC_ALL=de_DE
export LC_MESSAGES=de_DE
export LC_CTYPE=de_DE

Or maybe I've been speaking German all along.
Or maybe there is a TARDIS translating it

Assuming that the de_DE locale is installed, the following should work
(no need to export):
LC_ALL=de_DE LC_MESSAGES=de_DE
I only speak english however is there a way to make scanimage print out
help in another language? or is scanimage english only?
I tried
export LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
export LANGUAGE=de_DE
scanimage -h
and
export LANG=de_DE.utf8
export LANGUAGE=de_DE
scanimage -h
and made sure I had de_DE.UTF-8 to

Hi sane-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org
I have a USB scanner Epson Perfection 1260 (not a printer combo)
half working, using FreeBSD current (3 week old src/ & current
ports/packages) fresh installed sane back end, front end & xsane.
Example scans here from xsane & scanimage & xscanimage:

Oops, please ignore that line !
0x0402/0x9665 is some other internal USB device, not the scanner.

Yes- this does sound like a good idea. Can you modify the code which
parses the .desc files and produces that list? Or perhaps gather this
data for the scanners we already know about?

Hello,

Yes I may be able to find some time to do this, though gathering the

I don't know how to modify the code which prases the .desc, but I'm
willing to learn. Could you show me how?
Thanks,

Hello,
Wouldn't it be a good idea to include the year the model was
introduced and perhaps a few other pieces of information, such as the
dpi capability on the supported devices list?
Having this information on the list would have made it easier for me
to pick a model.
So maybe the list
Is SANE supported on any of the traditional handheld imagers from Symbol,

The documentation mentions handheld devices, however I don't see any of
common manufacturers.
In particular, I'm interested in SANE supporting the following devices:

Hello,
I am looking for a well-supported sheet-feed scanner of the same type as
these:

Just a note that I have an HP g85 all-in-one attached to an HP
175x JetDirect device nicely supported by sane.
RHL9 packages installed to support both printer and scanner functions
are net-snmp, hpoj, sane-backends, libsane-hpoj, and xojpanel

Hello,
We have to use a hhs for our senior project in the university. And,
our department will buy a hhs for the project according to our

Thanks for your answer. I know that page. However, I think SANE supports

The TPU of the EPSON Expression 1680 covers the whole scan area. The TPU
moves the lamp in sync with the sensor, so you always have the same lighting
conditions.
Check EPSON's web site, they also have an A3 model, but I don't remember
if they have a TPU for this scanner.
