I just tried on Ubuntu 8.04 with:

xsane 0.995
a Canon MP610 both for scanning and printing (Canon driver for printing)
Create a new printer in copy tab under preferences, leave the default
options:
Command: lpr
Num of copies: -#
150 dpi scan for both color and grayscale
Embed scanner

The attached patch adds libusb-1.0 support to sanei_usb, in
synchronous mode, so it's a simple port from the older API to the
pretty similar new one.
