I subscribed this list to report a regression in libsane:
libsane-extras Jaunty was working well with my EPSON PM-A820, but it
does not in Karmic (and Lucid).
In Karmic (and Lucid) I installed Jaunty's version of libsane-extras,
and my EPSON PM-A820

Not every Brother device is a Scanner thus that workaround, as I
understand, will never be added to
the official SANE distribution tree, however the same fix could work
for Ubuntu 10.04 too.
