possible that Google has changed something that causes these problems?

However, there are other IM clients available, especially if you're
sensible enough to use the wonderful XMPP :)
Lampiro is a good XMPP client. It supports XMPP Transports as well, so
you can run MSN over XMPP for instance. It's free software and runs on
Java ME.
Hope that helps,

Perhaps you can do that with link-local XMPP, aka Bonjour? If not,
then I can recommend using OpenFire. This is a free software XMPP
server written in Java. It can integrate with your LDAP directory to
automate setups of user accounts and pre-populate contact lists, etc.
It also supports chat

now have Pidgin contact list on only my first workspace, not the
second one.

Nomachine NX, for instance, can do this. The application would look
just like a normal, local, application. I do that with xchat. It works
very well. I think newer versions of RDP can do it too, if you decide
to go with a win32 version.

Not exactly. Pidgin interprets any incoming message of the form /me
foo
Actually, reinstalling Pidgin _cannot_ fix anything, since
uninstalling an application doesn't delete personal files, which user
configuration files are.

You asked how to install webcam and flashes? I don't know what you
mean by flashes. Pidgin does not support using webcams.

In Pidgin 2.5.5, which is in Ubuntu 9.04, crashes when attempting to
connect to a gmail.com XMPP account. What's more, since the account is
enabled, Pidgin will try to connect to it when it starts, which makes
it difficult to restart Pidgin, since it automatically crashes.
