For what it's worth, a date is specified on the page. XMPP will be
deprecated when Facebook API 1.0 is deprecated, which will be on 30th April
2015.

triangle against a section saying that Facebook support of XMPP is
deprecated and will disappear at an unspecified time in the near future.
I imagine the alternatives are not open

It has been like that for a while.
FB though just becomes non-contactable at times.
Without Pidgin or Empthy, I wouldnt use fb chat at all.
