Between most of the comedians starting podcasts and a decline in both comic-led sitcoms and late night comic bookings, you have to look for comedians a lot more than you used to.  At least that's been my experience. David On Sunday, December 31, 2023 at 04:11:00 PM PST, Kevin M. wrote:

Good place to put this, as I don't recall posting about it... if you didn't see Chappelle's *The Dreamer*, Rolling Stone did it for you... https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-reviews/dave-chappelle-the-dreamer-netflix-trans-jokes-attack-chris-rock-will-smith-1234938580/ (link) B

There were over 30 Netflix stand up specials released in 2023, so forgive me if I can’t keep up. Did Kay produce his out of pocket then allow Netflix to distribute it, or did Netflix approach him to finance his stand up special? And I see Netflix has doubled down on stupid with another Chappelle

Maybe it's because I listen to a lot of standup, but Jo Kay is hardly "unheralded". He's done a number of Netflix specials (the modern equivalent the old 1hr HBO special), has done some TV and VO and has a few film credits to his name, including fronting the file "Easter Sunday" last year.

They had more important things to do than extend copyright protections (which they should have left alone years ago), so "Steamboat Willie," among other things, becomes "PD" at the stroke of midnight east coast US tonight...
