I believe I have the same (or a related) bug, although I don't have gnash
installed.
Running Hardy Heron, with the latest updates.
Seems to happen when there are a lot of things happening on the display, for
instance when minimizing firefox (as others have said), or when a notification
window
It was still an issue two days ago, when I did a clean re-install of
ubuntu gutsy (I'll be travelling for a while and need absolute stability
;) ).

I rebuild the wine package for myself without stripping the symbols:
sudo apt-get build-dep wine
apt-get source wine
cd wine-0.9.55
export DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nostrip
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -us -uc
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i wine_0.9.55-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
And now my wine 0.9.55 runs perfectly without
Oh, and I should mention I am using Hardy with all updates applied.

Per B. Sederberg: thanks. Setting move_to_ to string type as you described
indeed worked ok. I had been stumbling on this bug for a while to, so your
workaround is welcome.
I am using compiz 1:0.6.2+git20071119-0ubuntu1~gutsy1 (backport), but this bug
was already present in the non-backport

Since the recent upload of Firefox beta3 to Hardy, most web sites I have
in my tabs become unusable, because of Firefox's seriously corrupt
screen output.
Additionally, this 3.0 beta 3 uses an impossibly huge amount of CPU and
memory, compared to the Firefox 2.0.12 in Gutsy.
