I install the pptp packages and am able to configure a new vpn connection with
the network manager applet. However, this new connection does not appear under
VPN connection (like it does under Gutsy). The

Yeh I fixed the problem yesterday. Turns out that installing Virtualbox
modules for 386 (instead of generic) had installed the 386 kernel and
made it the default in Grub. When I removed the 386 kernel and installed
the correct (generic) virtualbox module then my PC booted into the
generic kernel
Also applies to no candidate version packages. I suspect the package
list gets checked through twice instead of once.

does disabling CD drive polling help on your machine?
Do you see any improvement from
sudo hal-disable-polling --device /dev/cdrom ?
(Side effect: does not open Nautilus window for a CD when inserted, turn
it back on by deleting the created file in
/etc/hal/fdi/information/prefrences.fdi
same problem installing hardy in a chroot environment with debootsrap.

Thanks Mario - setting the /sys parameter works, however I can't get the
modprobe option to work. I already tried setting option hid
pb_fnmode=2 in both /etc/modprobe.conf as well as
/etc/modprobe.d/options - neither had any effect on a reboot. Did
something change in u8.04 re. module

Looks like I found the solution. I added my regular user to 'admin'
group and restarted the system. After that I'm able to use the 'Unlock'
button and other features like proprietary driver management are working
now too.
It means that regular user wasn't included in 'admin' group by default
