A small addendum: The machine is running too hot with both the Hardy
kernel (2.6.24) and the Gutsy one (2.6.22). The difference between the
2.6.24 kernel and the 2.6.22 kernel for me seems simply to be that the
2.6.22 kernel is able to reduce performance sufficiently to avoid the
machine overheat,

workaround, as many applications barf when dbus is restarted under them,
restarting dbus on a running system isn't something you really want to

I have the same problem on my Thinkpad X30. My buttons work and I can
turn the sound up and down and mute with them but there is no OSD.
Deleting the file ~/.kde/share/config/kmilodrc didn't fix the problem
for me.

I can confirm that for me Audacity is able to to plays audio, record
audio and both at the same time, and also while playing audio in a
Pulsaudio aware application like Totem.
