I have had a similar problem. My external USB drive absolutely cannot be loaded
in UBUNTU version 8.04 and version 9.04.
In fact, version 9.04 does not even DETECT the external USB hard drive.
In order to have access to my USB external hard drive, I have to use
version 7.04.

Appears to be fixed in Jaunty: oct-conf.h now points to 4.3.3, where the
libraries in question do exist, and this file now compiles without
error.

octave3-0-headers gives the wrong library directories for gfortran
Prior to the reboot, reinstall all of them. It won't affect their
configuration. I have done this myself many times. So change your second
step to add those three to the install.

startx fails since it can't find a video adapter (or similar).
