Ok, I have sorted it. For me I had to do the commands the other way
round:
xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v 1 switches to external monitor
while
xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v -1 switches to internal monitor

I think the problem might be that you have a keyboard shortcut assigned
directly to the super key. In my case I accidently assigned mute to the
the super key under system preferences keyboard shortcuts. Check to
see that you don't have anything assigned to super. Let me know if this
helps!

I can confirm this on Karmic with Geforce 9800GTX+ using Nouveau driver.
XRANDR works, and creates the dual screen when the correct spell is
typed on the Konsole. But if I open the System Settings - Display, I
