same issue here ... fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 x86, on a asus eeepc 901
(intel i945). Only wireless karmic backports installed, and all proposed

FYI, I've also tried the mini.iso and ubuntu-9.10-netbook-
remix-i386.iso, and using the boot.img.gz from hd-media/ instead of
manually copied files, all with the same results (failed to find main
/debian-installer/).
I did not try the usb-creator based method described in
Related observations, as I try to stalk down the Launchpad bug that
surely must exist for the apparent CUPS/samba Upstart race*:
