I posted a reply several weeks ago.  None of the suggestions improved the situation.  So then I changed frame buffer size in BIOS from 32 kB to Automatic.  The boot delay dropped from 9.5 minutes to ~15 seconds, with total boot time of ~30 seconds.  The scrolling difficulty in firefox disappeared.
