Sometimes I'd like to set my backlight somewhere between the preset
options I can get with Fn+F5 and Fn+F6. In the past, calling
]$ xbacklight -set n
where 0 = n = 100 would set the backlight to a value between 0 and
100.

Arbitrary backlight brightnesses get floored to the nearest 1/8
I apologize for not understanding the problem you were having. You are
correct and I apologize.
Here are the steps necessary to recreate the problem:
1 - Launch file-roller within Ubuntu 9.10
2 - Click OPEN
3 - Select the attached archive.
4 - file-roller should display a list of files
Further to previous comment, the debian version 3.2 is of course also
available in Lucid.

I have extreme swapping which turns my notebook unusable. Looking in the logs I
find messages related to swapping after the following lines:

The horizontal character size/pitch when printing text files is too
large. It seems to be 60-70% of the expected value.
For example, lp -o cpi=20 file.txt produces output with about 11 characters
per inch horizontally (expected 20).
