It also happens with the global menu on KDE. So, it's a bug related to
every implementation of global menus.
On unity, killing unity-panel-service restores Audacity. The process
spawns again, so a quick fix for when Audacity hangs is to press Alt+f2
(latest builds only) and enter:
killall
although I got no feedback on this one at all, it seems these tabs have
now been fixed with everything I suggested. I assume then that the
problem was already known or documented in another Bug. Ether way I can
confirm this is fixed, although I think the Tabs are so dark now they
don't stand out

This is documented somewhere, but I don't find it:
unity --reset (reset unity ccsm options to defaults)
unity --replace (restart compiz with unity profile)
unity --reset-icons (reset launcher favorites to defaults)

thank you for the fast response and help. My make.log was empty, but I was able
to reproduce the errors from above and the patch makes it work. I can confirm
this fix - is there already an integration into ubuntu in progress?

Fortunatelly I found a way how to enable printing on Canon PIXMA MP550
from ubuntu 10.04. If I remember well I downloaded and installed a
driver directly from Canon supporting site.

Thanks for your report. It seems that without xorg.conf, default sync ranges
are used:
(II) SAVAGE(0): default monitor: Using default hsync range of 31.50-37.90 kHz
(II) SAVAGE(0): default monitor: Using default vrefresh range of 50.00-70.00
