GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEAFAULT attaches its options to default GRUB menu item only.
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX does it for each item (recovery modes too).
Since you can edit GRUB item line at while boot time, it is up to you which one

I own same laptop.
Touchpad does not work until Touchpad on/off key pressed (fn+F7).
Videoadapter is working in VESA mode since neither opensource nor
catalyst driver support this chipset (just checked 13.1 catalyst bundle
with no luck).
That's for Debian, but I believe it's same in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu will recognise my terratec card out of the box and is listed as

I tried to do that in the mean time (using Alt F2), but no web browser
in terminal, so couldn't finish it, and haven't been able to locate the
report yet. Anyhow, I googled a little further and learned that
compizconfig settings manager is a notorious culprit. So I did a compiz
