I realized I had some updates to run and that some of those were kernel.
Having run those updates (and rebooted) things have changed.
Most applications (I haven't tested Rhythmbox or Clementine) are able to
play the one FLAC file I tested at random: Audacious, Audacity, VLC,
Xine.
However,
I would give you the dmesg output, but I can't find any from the
unsuccessful boots with the affected kernel in /var/log.

that Software Centre is not meant to be run as root. Starting it with
sudo works but the application was very slow when I tried to open the
list of installed updates. could you confirm whether starting software-
centre works as
I guess another possibility would be to read pbuilderrc as well within
pbuilder-dist? So if the environment var is not set, check whether it is
set in pbuilderrc before then reading devscripts fallbacks.
