I have a NUC with the current version of 14.04 and MAAS installed on it.
Today, I completely removed the contents of boot-resources and re-
imported the various boot/image files to remove old daily images and
older versions I didn't need.
If you look at the current image
I went through and deleted the rc directory from *current, and also
deleted the individual images themselves (had to compare inode numbers
in rc/ to the images in cache and deleted the images individually by
inode.
Then I did an install and it installed the correct image by default:
So it would seem to confirm that MAAS is choosing the older 20140410
images over the 20140416.1 images when installing.
This is my bootresources.yaml: (The only changes I made were commenting
out older versions I didn't want to pull down)

There is no log file there for cgroup-lite (although there are plenty of
other logs in the /var/log/upstart directory). I did manage to clear the
matter up by going into synaptic and doing a reinstall, but I wouldn't
expect that to delete old log files.

It also happened to me. Don't worry since it can be resolved by removing
appmenu-qt and appmenu-qt5. Those packages (appmenu-qt and appmenu-qt5)
won't be needed since you are using Gnome 3.

I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.10 to Ubuntu 14.04. I have AMD 6850 GPU with
two monitors, one 17 and another 20. I am using fglrx drivers for my
GPU. After upgrading, instead od boot animation I get black screen with
around one centimeter pink borders(the default color of Ubuntu).
Very strange :
I wiped out Ubuntu 14.04 to install Xubuntu 14.04 (no GPU on this
machine hence Ubuntu is unusable)
I added the linux-kernel-non-free in order to get the WiFi card detected
and usable, and Presto! everything is running fine...
What are the differences between Xubuntu kernel and

the Oibaf PPA (https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers) .
This will prevent the upgrade as that PPA contains different versions of
packages essential to Ubuntu. Please revert to the official Xorg
packages and try
