As to Unity, I will try, but this will require some time, because in the
meanwhile I rearranged the root folder of the crashing share, so that
the items are now much less (142), and the problem disappeared. Nemo nor

With a default xubuntu 14.10 install on 2 different laptops (MacBook Air
4,1 and HP folio 9470m) I can reproduce this issue. For me the black
screen occurs after login.
Adjusting power management settings has not yet helped. I did find that
I can solve the problem by reclosing the lid, waiting
Argh, on battery power wifi still disconnects after half an hour to an
hour stable connection :(.
So regretfully no solution yet.

As a workaround putting into $HOME/.profile a line
if [[ -z $XAUTHORITY ]]; then export XAUTHORITY=~/.Xauthority; fi

Just distribution upgraded Xubuntu from 14.04 to 14.10 and ended up
unable to connect to any wireless network. As above, the error was bad
password, which I knew was not the case. I had already determined that
the upgrade included network-manager, which I had previously replaced
with wicd because
