I had the same thoughts about 1.0.1f-1ubuntu2 so I found a downloadable
build at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssl/1.0.1f-
1ubuntu2.19. Installing just the ubuntu2.19 version of libssl1.0.0
solved the issue;

with todays daily image (which does not remove the .pyc files anymore)
the actual startup time got down to a bearable 10-20 seconds
(stopwatched several fresh boots from hitting enter to having the UI
appear) ... the time used during account creation is still between 4 and
5 minutes though, so i

remove npm. That's due to npm depending on node-gyp, which depends on
nodejs-dev, which depends on libssl-dev. You need to install an old
version of that package as well, you can't have a new libssl-dev package

Really, I've been running qt apps under mir_demo_server, miral-shell and
egmde for ages, there isn't a problem. You need:
sudo apt-get install qtubuntu-desktop mir-utils
And then:
mirrun qterminal

After upgrading from linux-image-4.4.0-38-generic to proposed update
linux-image-4.4.0-39-generic, NVMe drives are no longer working. dmesg
shows a probe failure.
On the previous kernel version everything is working as expected.
