This affected me when trying to build a tp-smapi module (battery
information etc) for my thinkpad.

Apparently the Debian team have fixed this with an updated version of 
module-assistant:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=702648

I haven't tested it and am happy to wait for Ubuntu to send out their
update through the normal update process.
