I installed the ppa above. It deleted my selected keyboard layouts in
the system settings but after re-adding them I now have the keyboard
menu in gnome-shell. Suggest integrating the ppa into the gnome3 ppa so
gnome-shell works by default. Thanks for the help Jeremy.

Just to reiterate: This is only going to help you if you have an HP DV-4
laptop. To build a patched kernel do:
[Install some packages (look at a tutorial)]
tar -xjf /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.31.tar.bz2
cd linux-source-2.6.31/
cp -vi /boot/config-`uname -r` .config
patch -p1

There is a race when gnome-session launches dbus. I think running a -rt
kernel seems to make it occur more often. The bug that is happening (or
something very similar) is described here:
