I have now fitted a computer (AMD-64 running Dapper) with an IEEE-1394 Firewire port, connected the scanner via that interface (it shows up at /dev/sg0) and, after tweaking permissions, xsane works it flawlessly. Another Epson Perfection 2450 Photo user (running various versions of Fedora Core)
