After I powered off the machine instead of a reboot, the HSP/HFP mode is
now working.
However there are two things to note, that might be related to this
problem:
1. In the sound settings menu (I'm using Linux Mint Ulyana) I cannot play a
test sound in HSP/HFP mode, only in A2DP

My Dell Latitude 5411 also contains an Intel BT Module 8087:0026. I can
also reproduce the problem with my Sony WH-CH700N headphones. A2DP is
fine, HSP/HFP is broken.

Tried the new bios 1.02.13 and sure enough, it resulted in the issues
reported in the previous link.

Add nodemodeset to the end of the boot line in grub (without )
you can try it first when you're booting.
I added it to the grub.cfg and works flawlessly.
linux /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/626f55f1-1946-46e4-9b74-47d00bb9e119
ro quiet splash nomodeset

Workaround:
1. Install rubygems, and possible ruby-full
2. sudo gem install rake
3. sudo gem install gettext
4. sudo gem install rbot
5. cd /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/rbot-0.9.15
6. sudo ./setup.rb
Then run rbot, and it'll work.
