After ditching edgers, I have been experiencing this problem for a
while. Some posts have said that enabling SNA acceleration fixes this.
This PPA has drivers and libraries that contain and use the SNA
acceleration method:

I don't have this problem anymore, but I have big problems trying to use
dual monitors. Gnome-shell, Unity, and Unity 2D die on startup, but
LXDE + Openbox works, except that if I start or stop using an external
monitor and use xrandr, all the apps die.

Thanks -- I AM using xorg-edgers because the Ironhide docs recommended
to use them. I'll try removing them and see how that helps.

This affects me as well. I have 3.2.0-3-generic-pae. I'm using xpra
for critical apps, like Eclipse, so that I don't have to restart them
every time I have to restart X.
