I upgraded from 14.04.5 to 16.04.1 on three different 32b machines. All
of them have the same issue and it happens in several applications. For
example if I attempt to update and/or upgrade the software, at one point
the GUI prompts for the password. However it is grayed out

BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck
I installed the kernel v3.9 24 hours ago as it was suggested. Since
then, the machine didn't freeze nor print the BUG message in the file
/var/log/kern.log.

low resolution in monitor

After upgrading to 12.04 the resolution is stuck at 1152x864, while the
maximum resolution of this Dell 20 is 1600x1200, it was working fine on
11.04 and 11.10. If I open system-settings-displays it does not
detect the maximum resolution. I used xrandr and after the window
I just upgraded to 12.04. As the machine boots, it seems to connect to
the network since I can ping to IPs, however it cannot resolve DNS. In
other words if I do ping google.com it would say unknown host
google.com. Please let me know what kind of specific information you
may need.

I updated bridge-utils and rebooted. The problem still remains. I had to
restart /etc/init.d/networking and then it worked. I am attaching the
