Same here on a Compaq 6715b after installing karmic 20090829.2 daily build.
Can't load grub after a cold restart.
Workaround : reinstall karmic from the liveCD then reboot without shuting down
(I guess grub is still in some memory part then, but is lost after a shutdown)

Tried the karmic 20090829.2 daily build : the sound seems to work fine
(except a single loud crackle when the device is awaken). Just installed
it instead of jaunty, more reports once I get to activate the
proprietary wifi drivers from an ethernet connection.

I even removed pulseaudio to use Alsa instead = no fix.
Updated Jaunty with kernel version 2.6.28-14 and reinstalled pulseaudio =
worked a few minutes and then the sound glitches started again.
I don't know if this problem is related to pulseaudio or if this is a
kernel problem, but to me Jaunty
The bug was reported ages ago, I have change my machine and upgraded
twice since then, so you can close it.

Same problem with a HP Compaq 6715b and a ADI 5.10.1.5161 sound card in jaunty
upgraded from intredpid.
Videos (in VLC or Flash) play in fast-forward with crackling sound. Audacious
also plays fast-forward crackling music.

NetworkManager daemon and by launching it with the --no-daemon argumet.
I've also tried wicd, no success, it seems to block my xfce launch and freeze
any sudo command.

I confirm a problem when trying to run any windowed program in wine, including
winecfg :
X is totaly frozen : no keyboard (so no way to switch to a console), no mouse
of course. But the system answers hibernation commands, so the kernel seems to
be still responding.

I have the same chipset on a USB dongle.
Usualy, waiting for the X session before plugin the device does the trick. If I
plug it too soon, I have to do manually
- iwconfig to enter the wep key
- dhclient on the wlan interface

I installed the public beta yesterday and had a panic during installation.
After several panics, I discovered the problem occured only when connected to
the network.
So I tried pluging my zd1201 dongle - OK
Then dhclient3 on the wireless interface - kernel panic.
Couldn't dump the logs though

I've had the same kind of problem for several month now (it actually began
after I switched from Dapper to Edgy). I'm running 2.6.20-15-386 now, but I
still have these random system freezes, with the same kind of short sound loop.
It happens almost everytime I reenable the flash plugin and play

dist-upgrade. Apt tries to configure cupsys-driver-gutenprint, but the
cupsd restart hangs. The only way to go on is to type Ctrl-C, but this
